Writing A Press Release And Helpful Tips To Get Started

Press releases are a great tool to get information out quick and to the point, especially in today's age of fast communication and social media. You can use these pieces of writing to share knowledge, inspire, and gather interest in whatever it is you write about. I will share my example of a press release, but first, here are some tips to keep in mind to ensure your press release will stand out.

    Tip #1: Know the Layout

You want to ensure that you understand what the press release layout should be.

  1. heading
  2. Summary Lead
  3. Body
  4. Closing paragraph

Tip #2: Starting with a captivating Headline

The headline is the very first thing people will see that will determine of they wish to continue reading your press release. This should be short to the point, but also interesting. You also have the option to include a subhead, which is a little bit of writing to elaborate the headline.

Tip #3: Be thorough with the Summary Lead

This part of the writing should contain the various questions people may ask including "Who, What, When, Where, Why, and How". This should cover the basics of the story, which makes it critical to include, because it holds the most valuable information of the writing.

Tip #4: Inverted Pyramid with the Body

I mentioned earlier that the Summary lead holds the most valuable information. This is an example of the Inverted Pyramid. Start with the most important information, because when this writing gets published, there may be information that is cut from the original writing. You want to avoid having important information cut, to get the most accurate info out.

Tip#5: Promoting with the Closing Paragraph

Unlike other writing, where you summarize what the writing was about, here you use this section to promote your company, or organization, or yourself!

Remember, there is not a specified word count for this type of writing, but keep in mind that a press releases job is to get a story out to publishers, so you want to be concise and interesting!
